What material is that made of?
3D building, known by some as 3D printing and also known in more industrial circles as additive manufacturing, generally uses thermoplastics in order to create products. The most common thermoplastics are known by their acronyms, ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)* and PLA (Polylactic acid)*. Each material has different properties. For simplicity's sake, ABS is the plastic Lego's are made of: strong, sturdy, durable and susceptible to warping only under high heat (approximately 230 C / 446 F). This is why stepping on a Lego hurts so much; they're made of very strong plastic which does not like to flex under pressure. The downsides to ABS are that it is much harder to print with, it's slightly more costly, it produces somewhat toxic fumes during the building process, and cannot be easily recycled.
PLA is another polymer plastic that is considered ideal for 3D building. It is made from corn, is renewable, builds with no toxic fumes, cheap to produce, recycle, and has engineering properties similar to ABS but a bit more rigid and brittle. As such, it is also the material used with the most available number of colors. In addition, many "mixed PLA" materials have been created since early 2014, including PLA mixed with hemp, beer, glow in the dark materials, coffee, and carbon-fiber, among many others! If you'd like to build with a material and we don't have it in stock, just ask and we'll get it for you! There's so many options to choose from. And if you're looking for a material to use for functionality, here's a great website that discusses the different common thermoplastics.
And speaking of additional materials, we are able to 3D build in steel, gold, aluminium, bronze, copper and many other metals! These may have very different cost structures, so please email us if you're interested and we'll get back to you shortly.
The following price chart is for FDM colors and materials we have in stock. A special order fee of $50.00 may be included for near-stock, or specialty stock requests and includes FREE shipping and handling. A minimum order of $9.99 is for setting up your personal dream to be built.
For a definitive price quote, send us your 3D model via our contact page or simply load your file into our 3D hubs page. We are working on developing the BEST and easiest interactive price system for 3D building and we'll roll that out soon!
We accept cash, electronic payments and credit cards for all services, even over the phone! A minimum payment may be requested upon acceptance of projects before printing can begin, but must be made in full before delivery of the finished project. Charges will show up on your statement as Uzzetta Holdings, LLC.
